The texture is soft and moldable, so I can easily wrap it around any size pill. My dog thinks it’s a treat and eats it right up without hesitation. No more battles, no more wasted pills. I love that they come in different flavors (we use the peanut butter or chicken), and they don’t upset his stomach.
They’re a bit pricier than DIY options, but for the convenience and stress relief, they’re 100% worth it. If you have a picky pup or one who’s a pro at avoiding meds, I highly recommend giving these a try!
Photos bc they are cuties. How do you photograph a dog taking a treat that will show you how great these are?
They ONLY get these “treats” when it is pill time.
All of them worked for once or twice then he doesn’t trust them anymore because he discovered the pill. No matter how hard I hide it.
Then I looked online for solutions, I found this and I found a long stick that helps you dump the pill deep in his mouth.
I bought both because I was skeptical, I didn’t believe in this treat.
I NEVER USED THE STICK!!!
THIS PILLS HIDE TREATS ARE A MIRACLE!!!
My dog is picky and he eats its whole every time, even with his mouth pain sometimes he can’t stand for this treat and he never discovers the pill no matter how big it is.
It’s been a month straight! No problems! Daily pills!
Buy it!!!!
Each pill pocket is a pretty generous size, we typically tear each one into 4 pieces which significantly extends the bag out for several more weeks and reduces cost over time. Very moldable and easy to use. Texture is very similar to what Play Doh feels like. Will continue to use these and recommend them!
If you haven't tried pill pockets, do yourself and your fur-baby a favor and use them. You'll be very glad you did. The dogs love the flavor, the pills go right down with no issues.
This is my favorite overall because it’s very easy to use. You take it out from the bag, pop the pill and then pinch! The good thing about this treat is that it’s very soft especially for my dog that has dental problems, she has no problem consuming it.
I noticed that there are different sizes for this item. One for pills and others for capsule. I tend to get the larger version because it’s just a nice treat overall.
The only downsides I can think of is that after pinching the treat, it tends to leave a small oily residue which is not too bad, but I find myself washing my hand after giving the treat. The other downside is that when you’re almost finished with the package, there are broken pieces on the bottom. But you can always pinch the small pieces together to make a big one!
Overall, I recommend this as an easy way to give medication to dogs!
My biggest issue is with the shipper, not the product. I would say about every third delivery (I am on a subscription that sends a bag every three weeks) is older and stale and somewhat dried out making them hard to form around a pill without just crumbling.
My other issue with the shipper is that they ship these in a soft sided envelope and it comes flat. Completely smashed.
So what should be a pocket that you slip a pill or a capsule into and form it around the pill or capsule ends up coming as a smashed lump of clay like material that is not as easy to work with. I’m sure it is cheaper to ship them this way, but when it is a product that is like this, the real value of the product is the pocket shape that makes it easy to work with.
I’ve tried out a lot of flavors on my dogs. The hickory flavor seems to hide medicine smells the best.
I buy the large ones in the big bags because they’re the best value for the money. If you don’t have more than needed, they make great treats. They’re amazing training treats. Of course, nothing is better for getting pills into pets. They simply think they’re getting a cookie.
If you’re worried that they’re bigger than needed for tiny pets, not a problem. They’re very soft. Just break off what’s needed and shape it around the pill. I also break them into pieces when using as training treats. I’ve added pieces to food when a dog needed a little encouragement. I’ve even stuffed them into or onto chew toys for a little added fun. Be creative!
When I take out the bag, there’s a lot of tail wagging, joyful barking and jumping. But I make them sit and ask nicely before they can have one. These pocketfuls of love are amazing!
I ordered the capsule size pill pockets in the hickory smoke flavor from Amazon when I ran out of samples. I had assumed the samples from the vet were the capsule size, but I think I was given the pill/tablet size, because the capsule size are much bigger. It worked out even better because I can use one pill pocket three times, saving some $$. I just rip off a third and mold it over the capsule, and store the remainder in an empty pill container to keep it fresh. If that’s too much work for you, smaller capsules like Gabapentin 100mg, will easily fit in the smaller Greenies tablet pill pockets. I hope this was helpful!
They look perfectly shaped on the package, but in reality they are all dumped in a combined bag together, and are not rigid, so they are going to get deformed. I carefully took out every one and put them on the plate for the picture so you can see best how they are likely to arrive, before you start handling the bag a lot at home. At first you might think it bad if many are malformed. But then you realize it doesn't matter at all. Just use it like play-dough and mold it around the pill. In fact, I need far less than a whole one anyway, so I easily break them into pieces and mold back together as needed.
The bag has a zipper seal. But personally, we like to keep a little dish with a lid for convenient access that stays on our counter for his morning and evening pill, and only pull out the bag to refill the little dish. It seems more convenient in a small rigid container than opening & closing the bag each time. But it stays fresh in both places in the meanwhile.
That will seem slightly wet or oily on your hands, and appear more wet if they sat a lot longer in the closed bag. But they will dry out more in frequent use. But it does leave my palm a bit shiny, so I always have to wash my hands after. It doesn't smell strongly to a human, so there isn't a real odor to cause concerns if you are sensitive, but I wouldn't say they are odorless.
More than 20 food brands have we been thru to find one he will actually eat. “Lotus Oven Baked Chicken”
He wont take treats from anyone, unless it is perfected roasted chicken, fresh rice, or cold pumpkin puree.
Not only will he not eat anything that is not absolutely freshly made,
but will step back 3 feet from the dish you are trying to serve him as if he’s being poisoned. He’s not.
He often visited the 3 acre open dog park at often as 8-10 times a week in drier weather.
Hyper-active to say the least, and RUNNING, running was his very favorite thing. till…
A few weeks again his desire to jump high enough to reach squirrels in trees,
and leaping from every piece of furniture in the house…. he developed a serious spinal disk injury.
At first his back legs wouldn’t work at all, he’s been heavily medicated, and that has made this sweet but picky puppy much more surley.
Pill time was a nightmare!!! Hiding them in food was pointless no matter how small the pill it would be gently set aside.
The direct method was worse, he would fight and pull his head away while I tried to use my fingers to put a pill in his mouth… it was a traumatic battle 3 times a day, mostly for me, but diminishing the trust of my more puppy each time.
I remembered my vet had used one of these pill pockets on him before, just as a treat and he actually liked it. NOT THE SMOKE ONES he won’t eat those… but the chicken OMGLOB, its been life changing pill time is “TREAT” time, he gobbles them down and wants more…
THANK YOU GREENIES for making something that is so unbelievably brilliant for people like me going through so much trauma already with their animals… I highly recommend…
In the far distant, and wretched past - giving pills (capsules and tablets) to ones faithful friend and loyal companion was something to be feared and dreaded, by both parties involved. This was an activity to be greeted with the enthusiasm that accompanies toe-nail trimming day (Another great idea out there waiting to happen, someone please find a way to remove the terror of toenail clipping time from the hearts of both man and beast.). However, with the advent of Pill Pockets, life is sweet again, tranquility rules supreme, and both owner and fur buddy can now be at peace with the world, and with each other.
These pill pockets are ingeniously designed little cup-like appearing objects, they are round or oblong (Depending upon your choice of the capsule, or the tablet version of the Pill Pocket), and have much the texture of fresh Play-Doh, that has been warmed in the hands until soft and malleable. The composition of this material appears to be something that holds tremendous appeal for ones happy dog, who no longer flees in terror at the mere sound of a rattling pill bottle.
One takes the pill or capsule, places it in the cavity of the Pill Pocket, then squishes the Pill Pocket closed, into the desired shape for the canine in question. By this point in time, your friendly canine has picked-up on the tantalizing aroma of the Pill Pockets, and is probably quivering., shaking, possibly offering to shake hands or to lie down........anything that will enable the Pill Pocket to be quickly introduced into the gaping maw of the pet in question.
What a relief, no more chasing the pet down, cornering the terrified animal, wrenching its jaws open with brute force, and somehow (Hopefully.) jamming the pill far enough down the throat of the violently resisting pet in order to clamp its jaws shut again, massaging its throat all the while (And somehow managing to keep a firm hold on the pet through all of these machinations.), and hoping with all ones heart the the pill has actually been swallowed, instead of being cleverly concealed in the corner of said pets mouth, only to be violently ejected as one releases the beloved fur kid, and watches the rear portion of the pets anatomy as it rapidly, and with great agility disappears to places unknown......this causing a repeat of the entire wretched, and disheartening procedure..
Well, those days are over. Pet owners everywhere can rejoice in their new lives of ease and happiness, while at the same time not being subjected to the reproachful and betrayed glances of their beloved fur kids. Just place the pill in the pocket, hand it to your happy and panting buddy, and the job is done. Everyone is happy, your best friend has just enjoyed a delightful snack, and is probably begging for more, and the pet's human is enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, and the lack of bitten and mangled hands and fingers that were the inevitable, and unavoidable result of the other positively medieval manner of pet medicating, in days gone past.
I maimtain a ready supply of of both styles of Pill Pockets at all times. When the package begins to run low. I immediately dash to my trusty computer and order more, via Amazon Prime. The brilliant geniuses at Greenies are to be commended, upon bended knee for their dream of an invention, which maintains tranquility in the hearts of both man and beast.
These Pill.Pockets are best stored inside of their closed bag, which is then placed inside of another zipper plastic bag, this ensures that the Pockets maintain their pliability, and the aroma so pleasing to the olfactory senses of canines everywhere.
These Pockets are not cheap, but I would rather go without food for a week, than to have to resort to the hideous pill-giving methods of days of yore. These Pill Pockets work, they do what they say they will do, and they help to maintain your peaceful, loving, and adoring connection with your beloved fur kid. I recommend these most highly, just the absence of mangled and chewed fingers is worth the price alone, not to mention the happiness and peace that you are granting your pet through the use of these wonderful Pill Pockets.
DISCLAIMER:
( Upon spell-checking this glowing review, it occurs to me that I probably should mention that I have absolutely no connection to the Greenies Pill Pocket people. I have no .idea of where they are located, or any knowledge of them, or of any of their employees or associates. I paid for these with my own hard-earned cash. No freebies, coupons, or gift codes were involved in the purchase of these Pill Pockets. I am just a really grateful dog owner, and a survivor of too many years of what used to be the sheer misery of pill administration to my beloved canines.)
When I first tried to give the pills in whole Pill Pockets, they were just too big for our 11-14 pound dogs to swallow without chewing (and discovering that there was yucky-tasting stuff inside, and spitting them out), so I needed to make them smaller and more "trustworthy". So in addition to reducing the size (and cost!) as I'll describe next, I also got them hooked on the treats by only giving small pieces of empty Pill Pocket a few times, until their suspicion abated.
Now what I do is divide each (large) Pill Pocket into 4 quarters, and flatten a piece out into a concave oval on my palm with my thumb (they're about the consistency of play-doh or clay, and very maleable). Then I fold/smoosh/seal it around the pill, being careful not to get the scent/taste of the pill onto the outside of the Greenie. Before offering the Pill Pocket, I divide one of the other quarters into pea-sized treats. After a big build-up ("Who... would like... a... SPECIAL TREAT!!"),I give them each one of the little pill-less treats (after a simple command like "sit" or "stay"--giving it as part of a training situation, followed by lots of praise, seems to get them even more enthusiastic about getting the treat)that they won't stop to inspect or even chew it). Then I give them the treat with the pill inside, and they're so excited, they don't stop to inspect or even chew it. They wolf it down so fast they obviously have no idea it has their nasty-tasting supplements in it (MSM, Dogzymes Ultimate and Verm-X for immune system enhancement and parasite prevention). I follow up with some other less expensive, but well-liked treats. If you have larger pills, or larger dogs, you might only be able to cut the PillPocket into 2-3 pieces, but then you're still cutting the cost by 2-3 times as well (and possibly making it easier for your dog to swallow without finding the pill).
One note that may or may not be relevent to your situation--I wanted to save time, so made up a batch of the Greenie-wrapped pills to keep in the frige. Unfortunately, the flavor/scent of the herbs/supplements apparently leeched into the Greenie layer, and the dogs didn't want anything to do with them. So now I just make them on the spot--it only takes a few moments, and I use the time to call the dogs and tell them about how tasty it's going to be, etc., and it's just become part of the treat ritual. :o)
Additional FYI use for anxious dogs/cats: I also use pill pockets with L-Theanine L-Theanine 180C as a substitute for Composure for Medium and Large Dogs, 60 Soft Chews as a natural calming aid for the dogs when they will be alone all day, having company, going to the vet, etc. L-Theanine is only one of the 3 active ingredients in Composure, but it seems to do the trick and "take the edge off" for our excitable chihuahuas. I just squish the contents of the capsule into a flattened pill pocket, work it with my fingers until it's completely blended, then divide it into individual doses, which I store in the frige. I strongly recommend that you do your own research about dosage--Composure's manufacturer, Vetri-Science, has detailed weight/dosage instructions on their website, from which I derived the dosage that I use. L-theanine is almost tasteless, it just needs a "dosing vehicle" because it's a powder, and the capsules for humans have way too much in them for my dogs (and I don't want to put it in their food because one might eat it all, or the cats might get it, etc.)
I've only used the chicken flavor (our dogs loved it so why mess with success?), and this is my first time ordering directly from Amazon. I've bought them at the pet store (much more expensive) and an Amazon marketplace vendor (much, MUCH more expensive, as it turned out--I thought I was getting six 9.6 oz packages for 26.59 including shipping, but received six 1.6 oz packages, totaling 9.6 oz, instead--I'm awaiting a refund, and ordering these directly from Amazon at a great price instead!).
